Breaking bread together in the heart of of Cape Town

Conceived by Community Chest of the Western Cape, Young Urbanists NPC, Studio H and Mission for Inner City Cape Town, the Mandela Day Langtafel transformed Riebeeck Square into one long public table where people from across Cape Town gathered to share a meal together.

Originally planned as a street long table on Bree Street, the event was relocated to Riebeeck Square to improve comfort, safety and security while preserving the original vision. Throughout the afternoon, residents, visitors, businesses, community organisations and people from all walks of life sat together around one shared table, demonstrating how public space can bring people together.

The Langtafel celebrated Mandela Day through a simple idea. Share food. Share time. Share public space.

The Langtafel was made possible through hundreds of volunteers, restaurant partners, businesses, sponsors and community organisations who contributed food, logistics, equipment and time. Together, they demonstrated how collaboration between civil society, local businesses and residents can activate public space and strengthen social cohesion.

The day also featured the Green Squad programme, led by Mission for Inner City Cape Town, where more than 400 individual succulents were planted with members of the public, creating a lasting reminder of Mandela Day while encouraging people to take an active role in caring for the city.

While the road closure was no longer required, the Bree Street Experiment (Safe Passage Precinct) was still in place to support safe pedestrian movement between the restaurants and Riebeeck Square, encouraging people to walk through the precinct and experience the city at a human scale.

The event showed how simple interventions centred around food, public space, placemaking and partnership can create meaningful moments of connection while supporting local businesses and encouraging more people to experience Cape Town's city centre.

Langtafel is a collaboration between Community Chest, Young Urbanists NPC, Studio H and Mission for Inner City Cape Town.

Inspired by the traditional European langtafel, the project demonstrates how streets and public spaces can become places where people from different backgrounds gather around one table.

The event combines placemaking, tactical urbanism, local business activation, food culture and community partnerships to create a new way of celebrating Mandela Day.

NEXT STEPS The Mandela Day Langtafel will return on 18 July next year, with plans to bring it back onto the street, subject to City of Cape Town approval and funding.
