ABOUT AMF

Young Urbanists is a platform for open dialogue, engagement and action focused on reshaping South African cities. Founded in 2013, it brings together practitioners, government, civil society and communities to challenge spatial inequality and advance more inclusive, accessible and sustainable urban environments.

As South African cities face housing shortages, transport challenges, road safety issues and climate pressures, Young Urbanists advocates for practical, evidence based solutions that improve how cities are planned, designed and experienced. This includes work across mobility, housing and green infrastructure, with a strong focus on implementation in real conditions.

Through research, collaboration and working with policymakers, Young Urbanists drives change through programmes such as the Safe Passage Programme, Street Experiments South Africa, the Active Mobility Forum, the Urban Design and Mobility Forum and the Safe Mobility Hub Programme. These initiatives test ideas on the ground, support policy reform and build partnerships that deliver measurable impact.

Recent work includes advancing safer streets through national advocacy and partnerships, and expanding Safe Passage projects to improve first and last mile connections between communities and key urban nodes. This includes South Africa’s first ongoing street experiment on Bree Street and neighbourhood scale pilots in Langa that test people focused street design in real conditions.

The organisation supports public transport through initiatives such as improving MyCiTi access and integrating PRASA timetables into Google Maps, while developing the Safe Mobility Hub programme to roll out practical infrastructure for last mile delivery and everyday users.

Young Urbanists also contributes to housing and urban policy reform through research, submissions and partnerships. The organisation continues to grow its community and work across cities, with a clear focus on implementation and measurable change
