MELLOWVAN

MELLOWVAN

A locally made electric vehicle supporting Safe Passage delivery, maintenance, activations, and green mobility across Cape Town.

Cape Town, Western Cape

Safe Passage support vehicle

The MellowVan was purchased by SDI Trust for the Safe Passage Programme as a practical investment in local manufacturing, clean mobility, and safer urban movement.

Built in South Africa, the MellowVan gives Safe Passage a flexible electric vehicle to support work on the ground. It can be used for project logistics, route activations, public engagement, open street experiments, and collaborations with Young Urbanists and programme partners. It helps the team move through the city in a way that reflects the programme’s values: cleaner transport, local jobs, and streets designed for people.

The vehicle also supports Safe Passage’s alignment with South Africa’s Just Energy Transition priorities. It connects low carbon transport with local economic development, showing how green mobility can support real delivery, not only policy ambition.

The MellowVan was introduced during Earthshot Week as part of #RideForChange, where Safe Passage travelled Route 01 from the Cape Town CBD to Langa with Green Riders, one of the programme’s beneficiaries. The activation highlighted what Safe Passage is working to build: safer routes, stronger local economies, and green jobs connected to everyday movement.

For Safe Passage, the MellowVan is a working tool and a visible symbol of the programme’s approach. Local, electric, practical, and built to support the next phase of safer streets in South Africa.

NEXT STEPS Next steps include using the MellowVan to support maintenance across Safe Passage projects, developing a Young Urbanists sticker pack, and preparing the vehicle to be wrapped for the programme’s first corporate sponsor.
