Cycling Advocacy Update

Cycling Advocacy Update

Safe and Connected Cycling

South Africa Wide

On this website page we give you an update on what we have achieved in terms of meaningful reform across different sectors.

In this case it is about creating safer and connected cycling lanes across urban South Africa.

Whilst we cannot be everywhere across South Africa, we have to start with some municipalities to get them from either no cycling lanes, to bad cycling lanes with paint that are not connected to safer and protected cycling lanes. Here is our advocacy update with our wins, what we are currently busy with and the aims for the new future:

  1. Completed: City of Cape Town current Comprehensive Integrated Transportation Plan to include any road upgrade must have a cycling lane with a protected barrier especially on road with a high speed difference.

  2. Completed: Collaborated with the City of Cape Town how to built and or repurpose a cycling lane with tactical removable kerbs and safe hit bollards. This included funding the first pilot part of our PPP Safe Passage Programme on Bree st and updating their Roads and Stormwater Manual to include this design.

  3. Completed: Advocated for the City of Cape Town to use this new SARTSM complaint tactical kit to procure and update one of their existing cycling lane facilities. In this instance, it is the bi-directional cycling lane on Granger Bay Boulevard.

  4. In-process: Advocating for PRASA to change their terms and conditions to allow bicycles on trains across the country. Currently managed to work with PRASA WC to get an interim order to allow for bicycle but currently this is not consistent across the metro especially when one boards at Muizenberg.

  5. In-process. Relaunching the Active Mobility Forum (3.0) to bring different stakeholders in the active mobility space including micro-mobility to strengthen advocacy for safe and protected infrastructure and incentives for active mobility.

  6. A lot more in the process that we will update on this page when we find more time.

This is only the start and we need your help. Please consider reaching out to us with ideas. We welcome all partnerships on this topic to bring safer and connected cycling.

Please consider joining our programme on this called the Active Mobility Forum or consider to become a supporter.
