BREE STREET TABLE TENNIS

What if a simple table tennis table could give people another reason to spend time on our streets? Together with ONE LOVE and Cornilleau South Africa, Young Urbanists is supporting a project to install a permanent outdoor table tennis table on Bree Street in Cape Town's city centre. The table will be free for everyone to use, with no bookings, memberships or equipment fees to access the space.

The project builds on our ongoing work to rethink how streets and public spaces are used. Through initiatives such as Bree Street Sundays and our street experiments, we have been exploring how relatively small interventions can make streets more accessible and enjoyable for the people who use them. A public table tennis table offers another opportunity to introduce recreation into the everyday life of the city.

Led by ONE LOVE, the initiative brings together a shared interest in making table tennis more accessible and creating opportunities for people to meet, play and spend time in public space. Cornilleau South Africa is collaborating on the installation of an outdoor table designed for permanent public use.

The first installation is planned for Bree Street, with the ambition to introduce more tables across Cape Town in the future. Before that can happen, we need to raise the funds to purchase, install and prepare the first table for public use.
