Infrastracture Change, not Paint!

South Africa

Public and Private Partnership

The Active Mobility Forum is a Young Urbanists programme and cross-sector coalition advancing walking, cycling, public transport access and micro mobility in Cape Town and beyond. It brings together civil society, government, the private sector, practitioners and individuals under one banner to shape policy, support infrastructure investment and build streets that work for people.

Founded in 2022 through a partnership between Cape Town Bicycle Mayor Sindile Mavundla and Young Urbanists, AMF responds to a transport system that has prioritised private vehicles while leaving many pedestrians, cyclists and public transport users unsafe and underserved. In a city where many people already walk, cycle and use public transport because they have to, active mobility is central to safety, access, climate action, public health and economic opportunity.

AMF’s role is to unite advocates, organisations and decision makers around practical change. The Forum works through public-facing advocacy, backroom policy engagement and on-street advocacy. This includes community rides, workshops, campaigns, policy submissions, partnerships and tactical street experiments that show what safer, more people-centred streets can look and feel like in practice.

The programme has helped advance work on protected cycling infrastructure, safer pedestrian crossings, traffic calming reform, micro mobility, public transport access and first and last mile connections. Through projects and campaigns connected to Safe Passage, Street Experiments South Africa, Zero Wait and Safer Streets, AMF combines research, advocacy and implementation to move from debate to delivery.

AMF is collaborative, supportive and evidence-led. Its values are simple: people first, equity, demonstration over debate and coordination over competition. The goal is to grow a diverse movement of people and organisations who can help reclaim streets as public spaces and make active mobility a core part of South Africa’s transport future.
